PlayShop is delighted to advise that we have received funding for our Improv in Schools programme. We therefore invite your and your students to take part in 2015.
We aim to grow from our 2014 program, creating a vibrant youth theatre community for 11-18 year olds that is sustainable and ongoing. Through the arts we wish to teach young people the skills of listening, connecting, creating, performing and working in groups, and empower them to create performances within their own communities. A key to this is growing each student’s self awareness of their self, their skills and thereby their own self worth.
Our 2015 offering:
The most important question: How do schools/teams sign up?
Easy! Just contact us and let us know a) that you’re interested! b) how many teams you’d like to register and c) what day of the week works best for your team/s to train. We’ll get back in touch asap to lock it all in.
If you or your students have any more questions, we’re more than happy to talk, whether over email/phone or in person - our workshop coordinator Jen is happy to come along and talk to your students about the programme. Here is a small flier that you're welcome to print and hand out to interested parties.
We can’t wait to get started and hope you’ll be joining us!

Our 2015 offering:
- We invite schools to register up to three teams of improvisors; these may be split any way you think appropriate (juniors/seniors, self selected, etc). Minimum 4, maximum 15 per team. Please note that we have funding for up to 12 teams, and we’d like to reach as many schools as possible!
- Each team receives a series of eight 90 minute after-school/weekend workshops led by one of PlayShop’s experienced tutors. We ask that schools provide a suitable room for these workshops - a drama room or space that can be cleared.
- Workshops start within the first three weeks of term 3, and run until the end of the term. Should any catch up be required we are happy to look into bookings during term 4.
- Regular inter-school workshops. These will be 3 hour weekend workshops held in a central location and led by a team of PlayShop improvisors.
- Our programme culminates in PlayGround - an all-in workshop followed by an all-in performance, where students will have the chance to shine in front of their friends, family, and Wellington’s improv community. Pics from last year’s performance can be viewed here. This will take place in the last week of term 3.
- Teams and schools are invited to organise their own performances, under the guidance of PlayShop’s production and directing support.
- All participants in our programme will be invited to experience the best New Zealand improvisation has to offer at the New Zealand Improv Festival (6-10 October at BATS Theatre) by way of discounted tickets and post show QnA sessions. We hope to offer further workshops with visiting top improvisors but this is dependent on our visitors’ travel plans and we will keep you posted.
- What does it cost?
Nothing! We have funding from Creative Communities to support 12 teams. Should we get more interest than we can support, we’ll talk with schools on a case by case basis. And if you run your own shows, all funds raised can be reinvested in your own schools and theatre programmes. - What do schools have to do?
Provide a reliable contact for our administrators to liaise with; this can be a teacher or student, as long as they’re able to coordinate with all participants and pass on details about events and opportunities. Provide a rehearsal space for the weekly workshops. We will provide teachers, workshops, performance opportunities, and the joy of improv.
